Traditional Chinese Medicine

Chinese Herbal Medicine

Your health is individual.

Your herbal care should be too.

Perhaps you're exploring Chinese herbal medicine for the first time, looking for a more personalised approach to your wellbeing, or wondering whether herbal medicine could be incorporated into your existing healthcare.

At Acupuncture & Beauty Centre, we offer individualised Chinese herbal medicine consultations informed by Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) principles, your health history, lifestyle and current healthcare needs.

Led by Eli Huang, a registered Chinese Herbal Medicine Practitioner and Chinese Herbal Dispenser with over 17 years of clinical experience, our approach combines traditional knowledge with careful consideration of medication interactions, safety and individual suitability.

Consultations are available at our Sydney CBD and Fairfield clinics, with online appointments also available where appropriate.

What Is Chinese Herbal Medicine?

Chinese herbal medicine is an established component of Traditional Chinese Medicine, with a history spanning thousands of years.

It involves the use of herbs and other traditional medicinal ingredients, often combined into formulas selected according to an individual Chinese medicine assessment.

Unlike purchasing a general herbal supplement, a practitioner-led consultation considers your broader health circumstances before determining whether a herbal preparation is appropriate.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, herbs are classified using traditional concepts such as their flavour, temperature and relationships with different functional systems.

These classifications form part of Chinese medicine theory and should not be confused with scientifically established pharmacological effects.

Research into Chinese herbal medicine varies considerably by formula and health condition. Some ingredients have been studied, but many traditional uses do not have sufficient high-quality clinical evidence to establish effectiveness.

A Personalised Approach to Herbal Medicine

Looking Beyond Individual Symptoms

Your consultation begins with understanding you.

We consider your health concerns, medical history, lifestyle, current treatments and personal goals before discussing herbal medicine options.

Your assessment may include:

* Current symptoms and general health history

* Relevant medical investigations and blood test results

* Medications, supplements and existing herbal products

* Sleep, digestion, nutrition and lifestyle

* Menstrual and reproductive health, where relevant

* Traditional Chinese Medicine assessment methods, including tongue and pulse observation

This information helps determine whether herbal medicine is suitable, whether additional medical assessment is needed and what precautions may apply.

Thoughtful care begins with understanding the whole person.

How Chinese Herbal Formulas Are Selected

Chinese herbal medicine often uses combinations of ingredients rather than a single herb. Within Traditional Chinese Medicine, ingredients are selected and combined according to the practitioner's assessment and the principles of traditional formulation.

When a formula is considered appropriate, we discuss its intended purpose, ingredients, preparation, directions for use, possible adverse effects and relevant precautions.

Herbal preparations may be supplied in different forms, depending on availability and individual circumstances.

Granules or Powders

Measured herbal preparations that are commonly mixed with water according to the directions provided.

Capsules or Tablets

Prepared formulations that may offer a convenient option when suitable.

Liquid Preparations

Certain formulas may be supplied in liquid form, depending on the ingredients and supplier.

Traditional Dried Herbs

Where available and appropriate, dried herbal ingredients may be prepared according to specific instructions.

Not every preparation is suitable for every person, and a formula may be adjusted or discontinued following review.

What to Expect at Your Herbal Medicine Consultation

Your Comprehensive Health Assessment

We begin with a discussion of your health history, current concerns, medications, supplements and relevant medical information.

Your Individualised Recommendations

Following assessment, we explain whether Chinese herbal medicine may be appropriate for your circumstances and discuss available options.

Your Herbal Formula & Instructions

If a formula is prescribed, you will receive instructions on preparation, use, precautions and what to do if you experience an adverse reaction.

Ongoing Review

Where follow-up is appropriate, we review your experience, any changes to your health or medications, and whether your herbal recommendations should be continued, modified or stopped.

Chinese Herbal Medicine Safety & Quality

Natural Doesn't Always Mean Risk-Free

Chinese herbal medicines contain biologically active substances and can cause side effects, allergic reactions or interactions with prescription medicines and supplements.

Certain herbs may also be unsuitable during pregnancy, breastfeeding or when managing particular medical conditions.

At Acupuncture & Beauty Centre, we take a careful, individualised approach to herbal prescribing and dispensing.

We consider:

* Your current medications and supplements

* Relevant medical conditions and allergies

* Pregnancy, breastfeeding or plans for conception

* Potential herb–drug interactions and contraindications

* Ingredient sourcing, identification and product quality

* Appropriate preparation, dosage and monitoring

We source herbal products from reputable suppliers and do not knowingly use ingredients derived from endangered plants or animals.

Please keep your GP and other treating healthcare professionals informed about any herbal products you take.

Chinese herbal medicine should not replace prescribed medication or necessary medical treatment without appropriate medical advice.
