Skin layers and ageing
The device used for micro-needling is a micro-needle roller, which contains 192 micro-sized needle points spaced equally apart. These micro-needles are very short in length and only affect the superficial layers of the skin. Micro-needle rollers penetrating above 1.5mm are only used in salon treatments only. It is recommended to use the longer needles in salon treatments and then complement it with a home care micro-needle roller.
It is an affordable alternative to medical anti-ageing treatments. Using the micro-needle roller at least once a week at home you can achieve some quite noticeable results.
What are the benefits?
Collagen Induction Therapy stimulates tissue regeneration and skin rejuvenation by penetrating the underlying skin structure. It helps with various skin concerns and ageing skin. Micro-needling is a non-toxic, cost-effective, and efficacious treatment option for a variety of dermatological conditions for the skin.
It improves the thickness of the dermis as well as epidermis. There is also increased blood supply to the areas of the face where the roller is used.
It can be used on all skin types and at any age to help improve skin texture and various skin concerns. It is a safe procedure with a quick recovery time and no downtime from work.
How is it different to other skin rejuvenation techniques?
The micro-needle roller helps stimulate new tissue formation, unlike ablative techniques like lasers and fractional laser treatments.
What is involved in the procedure and does it hurt?
The skin is cleaned and afterwards numbed with a topical numbing cream, it should not hurt at all. Skin is thoroughly needled in such a way that each skin part is needled 15-20 times. An even flushing to the skin is the best indication for the right treatment.
How many treatments are needed?
It is recommended to start with 3 treatments spaced 6-8 weeks apart between each treatments. Then depending on the skin, more treatments may be required. Results can be seen in 6 weeks as the skin turns over and the process continues over the following months.
The home care roller is used in conjunction with the salon treatments once or twice a week.
What to expect post-treatment?
The inflammatory reaction of the skin is extremely short and fades quickly within hours of the treatment from a redness to pink which may last 12-24 hours on average. The use of healing minerals, hyaluronic acid after procedures and a sunscreen will protect the skin. Do not use AHA’s, retinol or acidic active ingredients on the skin following a treatment.
A specific post needling kit is best used after a treatment together with the Home care roller.
Are there any side effects to Collagen Induction Therapy?
Since the micro-needle roller does not use any form of thermal heat (unlike IPL and lasers), it’s safe to use on all skin types and colour. There is no risk of post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation. There are almost no side-effects, none which have been reported in over 250,000 procedures done worldwide.
Risks of post-op infections?
Since the tiny pricking channels close within minutes, post-op infections are very unlikely.
What is the difference between salon and home care rollers?
The only difference is the needle size. Medical/salon grade rollers have longer needles to induce collagen to deeper skin layers usually from 0.5mm–2mm in length. The body starts to naturally regenerate skin working below the surface in the dermis. New skin cells are stimulated and blood supply is enhanced.
The home care rollers are very short, with needles usually only 0.2mm in length. Home care rollers help to enhance active substances through the skin barrier (stratum corneum) and improve and support results during and after medical CIT treatments. Home care rollers do this by stimulating the epidermal cells for proliferation, which aids in faster renewal cycles of the epidermis and thickens the epidermal cell layers. The epidermis will increase in thickness over time. Home care rollers help to maintain beautiful skin and provide a stronger, more protected skin barrier. It does not aim to stimulate collagen like the longer rollers. The home care roller is painless to use.
