What Is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a therapeutic technique originating from Traditional Chinese Medicine that involves inserting very fine, sterile needles into selected points on the body.
It has been practised for centuries and continues to be used in healthcare settings around the world.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture is understood through concepts such as Qi, meridians and Yin-Yang balance. These form part of the traditional framework used to understand patterns of health and illness.
Modern research investigates acupuncture through physiological processes, including its interactions with the nervous system and pain pathways.
Acupuncture is used in a variety of healthcare contexts, although the strength of scientific evidence varies depending on the condition being treated.
At our clinic, acupuncture is tailored to your individual presentation rather than following the same treatment routine for everyone.
How Does Acupuncture Work?
Understanding the Traditional Chinese Medicine Perspective
Traditional Chinese Medicine views health through the relationship between different aspects of the body and its environment.
Qi and Meridians
Qi is a traditional Chinese medicine concept often translated as vital energy. Meridians are pathways described within classical Chinese medicine theory.
These concepts guide traditional acupuncture point selection but should not be confused with anatomically established structures.
Yin and Yang
Yin and Yang describe complementary relationships within Chinese philosophy and medicine.
Practitioners use these concepts to interpret patterns and guide individualised treatment decisions.
Individualised Assessment
Chinese medicine consultations may consider your symptoms, health history, sleep, digestion, lifestyle and other relevant factors.
Traditional assessment methods, including tongue and pulse observation, may also form part of your consultation.
These methods complement, rather than replace, conventional medical investigations.
Why Choose Acupuncture?
People explore acupuncture for many different reasons.
Some are interested in complementary care for pain or muscular discomfort. Others are seeking additional support for general wellbeing or prefer a healthcare approach that takes time to consider their broader circumstances.
At Acupuncture & Beauty Centre, clients commonly enquire about acupuncture in relation to:
* Musculoskeletal pain and physical discomfort
* Neck, shoulder and back tension
* Women's health and menstrual wellbeing
* Stress, relaxation and general wellbeing
* Healthy ageing and facial acupuncture
Not every concern has the same level of supporting evidence for acupuncture.
We discuss your goals, relevant evidence and whether acupuncture is appropriate for your circumstances, including when medical assessment or another treatment is recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture needles are much finer than the needles commonly used for injections. You may feel a brief prick, tingling, heaviness or mild aching sensation when a needle is inserted.
Sensations vary between individuals and treatment areas. Please let your practitioner know if anything feels uncomfortable.
Is acupuncture safe?
Acupuncture is generally considered safe when performed by an appropriately trained, registered practitioner using suitable infection-control procedures.
However, side effects can occur, including temporary soreness, bruising, bleeding or light-headedness. Rare but serious complications are also possible.
We discuss relevant precautions and obtain informed consent before treatment.
How many acupuncture sessions will I need?
There is no standard number of appointments for everyone.
This depends on your concerns, medical history, treatment goals and response. Your practitioner will discuss appropriate options and review your progress.
Can acupuncture help with pain?
Research supports acupuncture as an option for some pain conditions, particularly certain chronic musculoskeletal pain presentations. However, evidence varies by condition and individual results cannot be guaranteed.
Your practitioner can discuss whether acupuncture may be suitable alongside other recommended healthcare.
Can acupuncture be used alongside conventional medicine?
Acupuncture may be incorporated into a broader healthcare plan where appropriate. Please tell us about your diagnoses, medications and current treatments. Acupuncture should not replace necessary medical investigations or evidence-based treatment.
What should I wear to an acupuncture appointment?
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing where possible.
You may also wish to have a light meal before your appointment and bring relevant medical information, test results or medication details.
Can I claim acupuncture through private health insurance?
Many Australian private health funds offer rebates for acupuncture provided by registered practitioners, depending on your policy and level of cover.
